"What I've Learned"

"What I've Learned" Video Series

Just about everyone loves a good story. Because storytelling can be an inspiring and effective way to teach, Brent has created a presentation called "What I’ve Learned...Lessons from the Classroom (and Office)." With 20 years experience as an educator (15 as classroom teacher and five as an administrator), he has an abundance of stories to tell. And what’s better than a good story? A story with a message. It's Brent's hope that he can inspire other educators by transparently sharing some of his experiences (both successes and failures) in the classroom and front office, along with the invaluable lessons he's learned from these experiences.

Below are the first seven stories in this video series -- check back later for new stories and lessons learned. Please be patient, as videos may take a few moments to load. The entire video series is also available for viewing on YouTube. Enjoy!

"The Water Bottle"

Brent shares a story about an experience that took place during his school's Literature Appreciation Day. As you'll see and hear, he reminds us of how, as teachers, we're always being watched by our students, and therefore need to be careful of the example we're setting.

"What's in a Name?"

This is an expression we've all heard before, but what's the answer? Are names important? In this video, Brent shares two of his experiences, one from the teacher's perspective and one from an administrator's point of view. Through these short stories, you'll see that a person's name isn't just important, it's powerful.

"'That'" Teacher

In this installment of his "What I've Learned" video series, Brent shares the story of his biggest regret in the classroom, a time when he completely blew it. Though certainly not proud of this one, Brent wanted to share the story in hopes of encouraging those like him who may have said or done something they wish they could take back. Educators aren't perfect. Like everyone else, they're going to blow it and can't always take back their words or actions. It's the choice they make after their mistakes that can help make the difference.

"The Fruits of Your Labor"

"Am I making a difference in the lives of my students?" This is a question all educators ask themselves, and in this story, Brent gives an example of how teachers can have a powerful impact on every student, even when they don't realize it.

"The Extra Mile"

Going the extra mile. Is it worth it? In this episode, Brent talks about how a little extra effort on the part of the teacher can make a big difference in the life of a student.

"I Gotta Go"

In this video, Brent shares an experience from his very first year of teaching. While definitely not one of his prouder moments (as you'll see in the video), he learned an extremely valuable lesson about the kind of teacher he wants to be.

"Did He Really Just Say That?"

Ever have one of those moments when someone says or does something, and you think to yourself, Did that just happen? Did he really just say/do that? If so, you'll be able to relate to this video in the "What I've Learned" series, where Brent shares a couple of his experiences and the good lesson/reminder associated with them.
