About Brent
Brent Coley began his career in education in 1996. He spent his first six years in the field teaching 4th and 5th grade in the Fullerton School District in Orange County. In 2002, he moved to Murrieta where he taught 5th grade for nine years at Tovashal Elementary. Brent is currently serving as an assistant principal at Shivela Middle School where he is enjoying his role of supporting teachers and parents as they support their students. He is also the Instructional Technology Leader for his site, helping teachers infuse technology into their teaching to maximize student learning.
Brent attended California State University Fullerton and earned a bachelor's degree in Child Development in 1995, his teaching credential a year later, and a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 2000. He returned to school at California State University San Marcos and earned an administrative credential in 2007.
Mr. Coley is passionate about educational technology. Whether it's podcasting, math review videos, or digital (iPod) flash cards, he's always looking for new ways to incorporate technology into education. His philosophy regarding educational technology boils down to this -- a) technology has the "cool" factor for students, and b) kids are already using tools like the Web, iPods/iPads, and cell phones, so educators should do everything they can to leverage this technology for educational purposes.
Though he is no longer in the classroom, the resources on his award-winning classroom website are still accessible to students and educators, and through his blog, Brent shares his thoughts and resources on teaching and educational technology. When not working, Brent loves spending time with his wife and two children. He also enjoys reading fantasy novels and playing golf.
